According to some articles that I found in Google, Climate Depression refers to “The mental health effects of global warming.” It includes depression, increases in stress, negative mental health and resignation about the future.
And it’s real!
Some people might think that I am very lucky to get a very huge opportunity in experiencing international negotiation such UNFCCC. I’ve met a lot of people there. Artists, Activists, who’ve been struggling for a long time to save the world. Yes, I am glad to meet them, and learn a lot from them. As well as to share and gather a lot of energies to continue the struggle.
But as I said before, Climate Depression is real. For me, it is not only about the report that show us how this earth is already hurted, and will be wrecked after reach above 1,5 degree Celsius. In fact, I am not that lucky to only meet those good people I mentioned above. Unfortunately, I also have to meet them, Government, Companies, so I have to witness that all influential persons don’t have any willingness and efforts to save this earth.
I witness how this world are made to extend the disparity between rich and poor, to improve gap of power structure in every context. They are who have power will do everything, to makesure that they don’t have to share their power with others.
If you think that UNFCCC will seriously talking about how to save the earth, and the sustainability of our life, well, this negotiation is more become a space for industries and developed countries to escape from their responsibilities. This negotiation keep resulting ideas about how to keep the industries going on as business as usual, while giving more burdens to people
Let me show you some simple examples.
REDD+. The logic is simple. Developed countries who have money can pay to poorer countries such as Indonesia, to save carbon, so they can continue to pollute with their industries. Meanwhile, Indonesia has to restrict their forest from the people who’ve been depend on their forest as their livelihood resources since centuries ago. They are who taking from the forest but also preserve it so it can be sustain. In that case, the rich countries, still able to make money. While people in Indonesia are losing their livelihood resources and trapped in the impoverishment.
Palm Oil as Biofuel. Come on, we all know how palm oil industry are the big problems in Indonesia (and other places). Not only destroying our bio-diversity, but also resulting land grabbing and human rights violation. But suddenly it appears as ‘solution’ for energy transformation. Who will get benefit, clearly the industry, and some consumers who able to pay more. But for people in Indonesia, it will expand our suffers.
Insurance for Loss and Damage. It is not a solution for people who already impacted or potentially impacted by climate change. It’s just the insurance companies trying to making money and get benefit from disasters.
When I know some women in community, personally. They are who will be the most vulnerable groups in experiencing climate disasters. They are who have initiatives to manage the forest, and other natural resources. With all they heart, considering sustainability, because for them, forest is their life. But I have to witness how the negotiation are keep producing false solution, avoiding women and community’s rights, and never care that we only have this earth for living. For future generation. For sustainability of life.
Here is a bonus. a song to play while you read this 🙂
